The Río Clarillo National Park will be the first in the Metropolitan Region, with more than 10,000 protected hectares in the Pirque commune. Meanwhile, the Salar del Huasco National Park, in Tarapacá, will be a reserve for flamingos habitat and a heritage space.

The Río Clarillo reserve, created in 1982, will become the first national park in the Metropolitan Region, with an area of 10,185 hectares in Pirque.

The recategorization of the reserve was part of the initiatives of the National Forestry Corporation to be administered as part of the National System of Protected Wild Areas of the State (SNASPE).

The measure includes the entire reserve and will mean a fundamental contribution to advance in the consolidation of the National System of Protected Wild Areas in the Central Zone, allowing an effective preservation of a sample of the Mediterranean ecosystems of the foothills and mountain ranges of the Region. Metropolitan, ensuring its biodiversity and its evolutionary processes.

The Reserve currently has seven trails, totaling more than 24 km, and, under normal conditions, it has more than 100,000 visits per year.

Meanwhile, the Salar del Huasco Wetland, in the Tarapacá Region, is an important nesting area for Chilean flamingos, which attracts a diversity of aquatic birds such as the Andean flamingo, James flamenco, the guallata, and Andean gulls, suris and Ducks.

The site also has a high cultural value, with the presence of archaeological remains and heritage sites.
